THE HISTORY OF BIRTHSTONES
STEEPED IN HISTORY AND FULL OF MEANING
Wearing the gemstone associated with the month of your birth is said to bring you luck and protection and each individual stone also holds its own meaning.
There are number of different beliefs about where the concept of birthstones originated.
One of these beliefs is an ancient one and can be traced back to the Breastplate of Aaron that was described in Exodus in the Bible. The breastplate was a religious garment set with twelve gemstones that represented the twelve tribes of Israel. Writings connect these twelve gemstones in the breastplate to the twelve signs of the zodiac. The idea was that each gemstone had special powers associated with the corresponding astrological sign and that wearing these stones at the right time would have therapeutic and talismatic benefits.
Another belief is that astrologers have long accredited certain characteristics of planets with gemstones. Through this association, the planets have come to represent the months and the gemstones associated with them are today known as birthstones.
Though our modern concept of birthstones, where you wear the gemstone that corresponds to the month of your birth is believed to be traced back to 18th Century Poland, by the arrival of Jewish gem traders to the area. Yet the modern list of birthstones was not defined until 1912 in New York by the National Association of Jewellers.
This modern birthstone list has been updated a number of times since 1912 and there are also different regional variations.
